<p>KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA'S highest court on Tuesday rejected an opposition bid to reclaim control of a northern state, ruling that the Barisan Nasional government's takeover last year was legal. </p><p>Perak state was left in political limbo in February 2009 when the Barisan Nasional, which rules nationally, moved to oust the Pakatan Rakyat opposition alliance, which won the state in polls the previous year. </p>

<p>ONE of the biggest hauls of contraband cigarettes in recent years has been uncovered at the Tuas Checkpoint during a routine inspection.</p><p>The haul of 8,349 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes worth $641,000 in duties and taxes were found hidden among boxes of plastic containers on a Malaysian-registered prime mover truck by Immigration and Checkpoint Authority (ICA) officers.</p>

<p>SINGAPORE Telecommunications' English soccer coup has helped the telco snared an unprecedented 29,000 pay-TV customers in the three months to Dec 31, and it is expecting a bigger boost in subscribers come June.</p><p>Although its 155,000 mio TV subscribers are a small fraction of rival telco StarHub's 539,000 customer base, SingTel chief executive for Singapore Allen Lew said on Tuesday that he is confident it can close the gap with an expected 'influx' of new customers in June, ahead of the 2010 English Premier League (EPL) season which begins in July. </p>

<p>SINGAPORE Telecommunications, SingTel, said its profit rose 24 per cent last quarter, boosted by higher income from its local and Australian businesses.</p><p>The company, also known as SingTel, said in a statement Tuesday that net profit for the October-December period rose to S$991 million from S$799 million a year earlier.</p>

<p>KUALA LUMPUR - THE sodomy trial of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim entered its fifth day on Tuesday with the High Court set to hear the defence's application for Justice Datuk Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah to recuse himself from hearing the case.<p>However, the hearing was adjourned to Wednesday after Anwar's counsel, Karpal Singh, asked for time to respond to the affidavit-in-reply filed by the prosecution. </p>
