<p>BANGKOK - THAI authorities announced on Friday they are boosting security in the country's capital after a series of grenade attacks possibly linked to recent political unrest.</p><p>Metropolitan Police spokesman Maj. Gen. Piya Uthayo said police would work with the army and city officials to provide security and surveillance at more than 400 high-risk spots following 'several incidents that have threatened public safety.'</p>

<p>NEW YORK - WALL Street stocks soared on Friday as a much anticipated jobs report boosted hopes that the US economic recovery was on the right track. </p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 117.46 points (1.14 per cent) to 10,437.56 in opening trade, extending a robust 428-point climb since Monday after a week of mostly positive economic data. </p>

<p>THE Singapore dollar hit a record high against the greenback on Friday before easing slightly, prompting rumours that the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) may have intervened to stop its rise.</p><p>The Singdollar started trading at $1.3467 against the US dollar on Friday morning, but rose to $1.3443 before falling slightly by mid-day.</p>

<p>WASHINGTON - US UNEMPLOYMENT jumped to 9.6 per cent in August, the Labor Department said on Friday, showing the recovering economy is still struggling to create jobs. </p><p>In a keenly awaited unemployment report, the department said the economy lost 54,000 jobs last month, a better figure than the 120,000 loss expected by economists. </p>

<p>TWO men who had tried to give up their right to appeal against the death sentence two years ago have escaped the hangman's noose after the Court of Appeal overturned their murder convictions.</p><p>Instead Daniel Vijay Katherasan and Christopher Samson Anpalagan, both 27, were found guilty of robbery with hurt, which carries jail of between five to 20 years and at least 12 strokes of the cane.</p>

<p>THE MONETARY Authority of Singapore (MAS) will push ahead to implement the revised deposit insurance plan early next year, following 'useful' feedback from consumers and the industry.</p><p>It said in a statement on Friday that the scope of insurance coverage will be expanded from $20,000 to $50,000 for each depositor, as proposed in a consultation paper earlier in the year.</p>
